THS Background

Incorporation

The THS was incorporated on December 9, 1887.

The THS website describes its role as:

“To promote the humane care and protection of all animals and to prevent cruelty and suffering.” The day-to-day operation of the THS involves the direct handling of lost, abandoned, unwanted and injured pets and wildlife.”

Former Partnership with the City of Toronto

From approximately the year 1920, the THS was responsible for animal control and sheltering for the City of Toronto (the “City”). In 1985 the City removed the animal control services from the THS, and in 2001, the City ended its animal sheltering contract with the THS. After 2001, the THS no longer performed services for the City and financial support from the City was terminated.

Current Funding

The THS is now funded almost entirely by public donations with charitable status under the Income Tax Act (Canada) granted by Canada Revenue Agency.

Membership and Governance

There are approximately 1,800 active, voting members of the THS.

Active members residing or working within a 60 km. radius of the THS are entitled to vote at members' meetings.
